Costa Rica 🌿

Sustainable Travel in Costa Rica

Follow in Our Creative Travel Director's footsteps

A small but vibrant country, which holds 5% of the world's biodiversity. Over 25% of its land is protected as national parks and reserves!

From monkeys and sloths to toucans and sea turtles, Costa Rica is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts wanting to discover natural wonders. The country offers a perfect blend of eco-tourism, adventure activities, and stunning beaches on both its Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. Visitors can experience zip-lining, white-water rafting, surfing, hot springs, volcanos, forest hikes, dolphin & whale watching, and much more!

My Recommendations

Don't just go for the beach! True highlights are the wildlife, nature, and activities, meaning this destination is best experienced as a multi-centre trip exploring, sightseeing, and doing! Of course, build in some down time but you'd be missing out spending your time solely within the grounds of a beachfront resort hotel!

Don't underestimate the travelling - both the journey to & from Costa Rica as well as the distance between the numerous areas of interest. A 2 - 3 week holiday is sufficient depending on your specific interests.

Plan a varied and balanced itinerary taking in nature at both a cloud forest and a rain forest. Include some pre-arranged activities as well as some down time to rest.

The country is known for its "Pura Vida" lifestyle, reflecting the local culture of happiness and relaxation. There's no need to pack high heels or dress up fancy. It's all very casual.

If you're not prepared to embrace nature, Costa Rica is probably not for you. For example, hotels often have fans instead of air conditioning and the wildlife may wake you early!

Unless you have specific interest, don't be put off travelling during wet season, it didn't compromise my experience in any way. NB: Turtle season coincides with the wet season.

What I Loved Most

That's a very tough question so here are three stand-outs…

  • The friendly people. Everyone I encountered on my travels made me feel welcome and safe, plus English is widely spoken in the tourist areas. Costa Rica is a well-suited destination for all types of traveller, from couples to solos, and family groups.
  • The humbling feeling of exploration and spotting wild animals in their natural habitat.
  • Getting off-grid, close to nature, going make-up free, and enjoying limited wi-fi! It’s good for the sole!

Best Time To Travel

Ultimately Costa Rica is a year-round destination with a tropical climate. The dryer season is Dec-Apr and the rainier season is May-Nov. The UK school summer holidays through to October half term are when to go to see Green Sea Turtles nesting and hatching on the country's Caribbean coast.

How to get there?

British Airways currently operates 3 times a week non-stop from London Gatwick to San José Airport, Costa Rica however this is in high season only between November and March (Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays). Flying direct takes just under 11 hours. Alternatively, there are plenty of year round indirect options via Europe, the USA, and Canada. The shortest indirect route is from London or Manchester via Madrid.

To make the most of a trip to Costa Rica you really should reach out and allow me to expertly plan you a tailor-made itinerary.
