Visit Switzerland

Follow in Our Creative Travel Director's footsteps
Switzerland may be a small country but it packs a big punch! A landlocked country of towering mountains, glistening lakes, green valleys, pretty alpine villages and thriving cities. A popular winter holiday for skiers it is also a wonderful year-round destination. I was lucky enough to visit in September which is a perfect month to enjoy pleasant weather and stunning landscapes.

My Recommendations

Swiss Travel Pass – entitles you to unlimited travel in Switzerland by train bus or boat as well as entry to over 500 museums, it represents excellent value.
Glacier 3000 – Home to the world's first suspension bridge that spans two mountain peaks, The Peak Walk Tissot is an exhilarating and must-do experience.
Jungfraujoch – Europe's highest altitude railway station at the heart of the UNESCO heritage site "Swiss Alps Jungfrau - Aletsch" is an amazing place to visit. A year-round cog railway runs through a tunnel to the Jungfraujoch where visitors are greeted by a high alpine wonderland including The Spinx observation deck, Ice Palace, a glacier and snow park. Treat yourself to a meal at Restaurant Crystal with it's high alpine ambiance and delicious a la carte menu.
Panoramic trains – A visit to Switzerland wouldn't be complete without a trip on one of the 5 panoramic train routes which are considered amongst the best in the world.
  • Bernina Express
  • Glacier Express
  • Golden Pass Express
  • Gotthard Panorama Express
  • Luzern- Interlaken Express

Lake Geneva – go for a stroll or even take a dip in the lake which offers great opportunities for swimming.

Lucerne – Ranked one of the prettiest cities in the world with an old town full of medieval architecture and colourful wall paintings.
The Fasnacht carnival where the streets turn into vibrant parades of colour, music and costume is held in February.

What I Loved Most

The Swiss cuisine with its use of fresh, local ingredients. Fondue on the Alps was a highlight of my visit.
The Alpine Coaster at Glacier 3000 was an adrenaline fuelled experience that I will never forget.
Bern – a wonderful capital and my favourite of the cities we visited; Old Berne was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.
Switzerland's approach to sustainability. Nature is Switzerland's greatest asset and they do much to protect it. Look for the "Swisstainable" logo at hotels and businesses that participate in this programme.

Best Time To Travel

Winter for ski-ing and winter sports. Visit between Spring and Autumn for accessible landscapes, walking, stunning scenery and sight-seeing.

How to get there?

So many options including plane, train and car. Daily flights from many UK airports to cities including Basle, Geneva, Zurich and Berne.
I flew with Swissair from Heathrow into Zurich and returned from Geneva.
The flight from London takes only 90 minutes.
