Borneo & Kuala Lumpur

Visit Borneo & KL

Follow in Our Creative Travel Director's footsteps

The perfect way to join multiple destinations together, mixing the hustle and bustle of a beautiful city such as KL, with the magic of the 3rd largest Island in the world, Borneo.

Be prepared for an overload on the senses, with an up-close and personal experience with wildlife, bringing out the David Attenborough out in everyone!

My Recommendations

In KL, visit the ‘Helipad’ rooftop bar, personally I’d skip the very busy Petronas towers in favour of the KL tower, as you get to see just as much, and a great view of the Petronas too!

KL is better on foot, it’s where the action is.  The bus tour gets stuck in the traffic, so just wonder in amazement through the streets, many food markets, Chinatown, mosques and much more.

Hopping over to Borneo, Kuching is a must.  Lots of history, a real mix of cultures and the local guides we use know everything! I ended up tasting opium coffee, visiting a Chinese temple and sharing a small boat with the local school commute – all just amazing.

A world away, but just a short flight takes you to Sepilok nature reserve, an absolute must.  Watch in awe at flying squirrels, Orangutans, Silver leaf Monkeys and much more, mostly right outside your lodge.

You won’t have done Borneo unless you drop by Abai Jungle Lodge.  Boat trips like this are rare, winding down the Kinabatangan River, calling at a local village to judge a competition, spotting crocodiles, Proboscis monkeys, Rhinoceros Hornbills and loads more.  You even get a cup of tea and a biscuit surrounded by nature, watching fireflies.  It is simply awesome!

I finished the trip off with some luxury.  The private Gaya Island is the perfect way to spoil yourself, swim amongst the coral, canoe through mangroves, or simply just ‘exist’.

What I Loved Most

The locals.  Try their food, the generosity blew me away, from those that have little, they opened their doors and welcomed you like family.

An Island with so much nature, it really felt unspoilt and genuine.

The Batu caves in KL, very touching to see so many coming to pay their respects and climb the never-ending stairs. Even more fun when it rained.

I got the chance to plant some new coral, helping the locals to restore and re-energise the world beneath the water!

Just walking through the jungle at Abai Lodge, completely unrehearsed a complete family of Proboscis Monkeys flew through the trees.  What a treat to be there at that exact moment.

Best Time To Travel

I went mid-July to Early September which was perfect.

How to get there?

We flew Heathrow to KL, then KL to Borneo and a few internal flights to capture the best of the Island.  Your guides and private transfers are awesome, always on time and so knowledgeable, that’s worth it in itself!

I’ll happily plan the best itinerary for you and your travel companions, capturing the very best bits and offering you lots of options to choose from.
