Having just returned from the enchanting city of Lisbon, I'm excited to share my experiences exploring Portugal's vibrant capital. As someone who loves discovering new places, Lisbon immediately captured my heart with its perfect blend of historic charm and modern energy. From navigating the iconic yellow trams to discovering hidden viewpoints across its famous seven hills, this city offers something for every type of traveler. Let me take you through my recent adventure and share some insider tips that will help make your visit to Lisbon truly unforgettable.
Take a famous yellow tram number 28 it offers the best tram route in the city and is priced from 3 euros. A visit to Lisbon must include a visit to the twice weekly flea market Feira da Ladra held on a Tuesday and Saturday located in the Alfama district of the city. When it comes to dining, take a meal or two in the Alfama district where the cobbled streets come to life with traditional singing from every corner 😉
Rich history, stunning architecture which I am sucker for and beautiful viewpoints from its seven hills. There are over 1000 electric tuk tuks operating in Lisbon and it's a great and fun way to explore the city of which we did one evening, these electric run vehicles carry up to 6 people and it's an easy way to explore this beautiful city. Our driver was extremely knowledgeable telling us about the seven hills that Lisbon is famed for and numerous churches, places of interest and taking us to these spectacular viewpoints. I wont lie, walking these seven hills would have been a challenge in my heels! So if you fancy a walk wear comfy shoes!
The city's vibrant neighbourhoods, like Alfama and Bairro Alto, offer a mix of old-world charm, lively nightlife, and traditional Fado music. We enjoyed a delicious Portuguese meal with traditional music in the Alfama and I could have easily returned there every night to try a different restaurant. This beautiful city offers sunny weather, and affordable prices compared to other European capitals.
Lisbon is a 365-day destination, March - May & September - October brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds seeing temperatures 15-25 degrees, whereas in June – August brings the hotter weather and can soar to 30’s and you will expect a lively atmosphere. Lisbon’s winter are mild compared to the rest of Europe with temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees, its quieter and more affordable in the winter but you may experience rain and shorter days.
By air it’s a short 2 hours 40 minutes flight, the airport is a mere 7km from the city so it’s extremely easy to get into the city by taxi, metro (red line) or Aerobus a shuttle service that runs to key points in the city and some major hotels.
