Where even is Lapland? ‘The real home of Father Christmas’ spans more than one country…

Finnish and Swedish Lapland are in highest demand for snowy winter breaks, however, geographically, this sparsely populated area sprawls across the borders into neighbouring Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea.

The subarctic region is known for its wilderness, ski resorts, natural phenomena including the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights, as well as being the home of Santa!

The capital, Rovaniemi, is the edge of the Arctic circle and gateway to Lapland for those arriving by land from southern Finland as well as some arrivals by air (multiple airports in Lapland).

I visited Finnish Lapland with my family in 2019 searching for Santa 3 night escorted group tour. We stayed in a log cabin, tried reindeer steak, played party games on our flight, and were transported back to our childhoods by the elves – an around magical experience involving so many unforgettable experiences in a real life Narnia!

My Recommendations

  • What type of break would you like? Lapland isn’t just for families. Winter activity breaks and ski resorts can provide all the typical winter activities included with a Santa break but without Santa. Try ice fishing, snowmobiles, cross-country skiing, husky sledding, visit an Ice Hotel or even stay overnight in a glass igloo and if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There really is a lot of choice!
  • Due to the remote location, food and drink can be expensive to buy locally. We recommend opting for a break that includes at least some of your meals over self-catering.
  • Don’t go it alone! A holiday to this region requires careful planning. Tours represent fantastic value for money and ensure your accommodation is located near your activities. Airport transfers and transport throughout your trip is provided and this ensures an experienced driver will take care of your safety! Self-driving in Lapland is not recommended and potentially dangerous for visitors.

What I Loved Most

All of it! Our husky sled safari through the trees was so peaceful. The crisp fresh air, the clear night sky, the kids happy faces. During the winter months, the limited grey light takes some getting used to but ultimately adds to the magical experience. Our trip ensures each child receives a gift off their own Christmas list from Santa rather than a generic present – just one example of how the best trips differ from the alternatives.

Best Time To Travel

Winter! The Santa season is short, usually commencing last week of November through until Christmas Eve. Lapland ‘should’ have good snow coverage as early as end of October but with global warming, we suggest planning your trip from the second week of December. Winter activity breaks and ski run through until March/ April.

How to get there?

Escorted tours charter flights from many different UK airports on just a handful of set departure dates. Alternatively, tailor-made itineraries can be more flexible utilising scheduled services but are likely to cost more. There are a number of different airports in Lapland meaning there will usually be a trip to suit your requirements.
Each year we have a number of families visit the region for winter breaks, ski holidays, and Santa breaks. Our advice is book early to take advantage of early booking offers, to get the date you want, and for log cabin availability – these always sell out first! The best trips aren’t cheap but are worth every penny. Authenticity, location, and exact inclusions make all the difference here!
