Visit Mauritius

Follow in Our Creative Travel Director's footsteps

My first visit to the Indian Ocean and Mauritius was nothing short of magical. As the plane descended, I was mesmerised by the sight of turquoise waters, lush green mountains, and endless stretches of white sandy beaches. Stepping off the plane, the warm tropical air and the scent of the ocean instantly made me feel like I had arrived in paradise. Mauritius had always been a dream destination for me but experiencing it first-hand after a 30 year wait was beyond anything I had imagined. From the vibrant culture to the breath-taking natural beauty, I knew from the very first moment that this trip would be unforgettable.

My Recommendations

When visiting Mauritius, I highly recommend making the most of your trip by experiencing a twin-centre holiday, combining it with Dubai or Sri Lanka for a unique contrast of cultures and landscapes. If staying solely on the island, consider splitting your stay between two different hotels - perhaps one in the lively north, close to bustling beaches and nightlife of Grand Baie, and another in the tranquil south, surrounded by nature and stunning scenery. No trip is complete without venturing out on an exciting boat trip, where I had the unforgettable experience of spotting wild dolphins, snorkelling and swimming with sea turtles, and even seeing playful monkeys along the shores of nearby islets. The stunning waters, hidden beaches, and incredible marine life make this adventure an absolute must for any traveller looking to explore beyond the resort and see the true beauty of Mauritius!

What I Loved Most

What I loved most about visiting Mauritius was the perfect blend of stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and breath-taking nature. The crystal-clear waters and powdery white sands of Belle Mare and Le Morne were like something out of a postcard, perfect for relaxing and swimming. Snorkelling and diving in the Blue Bay Marine Park felt like stepping into an underwater paradise, teeming with colourful fish and coral reefs. Beyond the beaches, exploring the Black River Gorges National Park was an unforgettable experience, with lush forests, waterfalls, and incredible hiking trails. The island’s rich mix of Indian, Creole, Chinese, and French influences made the food an absolute delight - whether it was fresh seafood, street-side dholl puri, or a flavourful curry. But what truly made Mauritius special was the warm hospitality of the locals, who made me feel welcome everywhere I went. It’s a place where natural beauty meets cultural richness, and I can’t wait to go back!

Best Time To Travel

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: a hot, humid summer from November to April and a cooler, drier winter from May to October. Summer temperatures range between 25-33°C  with the most rainfall occurring between January and March, which is also cyclone season, though major storms are rare it’s still worth being mindful. Winter is milder, with temperatures around 18-26°C making it perfect for sightseeing, hiking, and surfing, especially on the east coast, where trade winds are strongest. The west and north coast’s remain warmer and more sheltered year-round, while the central plateau is noticeably cooler. Whether you're after sun-drenched beaches, water sports, or adventure, Mauritius offers great weather nearly all year - just pick the season that suits your plans best!

How to get there?

Travellers from the UK have multiple flight options to Mauritius, with both direct and in-direct services available. Direct services from Gatwick offer a flight time of around 12 hours. For those flying from London Heathrow, London Stansted, or other UK airports like Manchester and Birmingham, indirect flights are available usually with stopovers in Dubai, Istanbul, or Paris. Indirect flights naturally have longer travel times, depending on layovers, but they offer more flexibility in terms of departure locations and pricing. I flew indirect via Dubai and was pleasantly surprised on how easy it made my journey and would recommend the transit through Dubai.
